Helping You to Help Yourself

During my ten years as a health practitioner, one of the most useful tools I have to help in finding the root cause of problems, is the story that the body tells. We can observe this in each other by looking closely at how we hold our bodies. This physical manifestation of our health (posture) is influenced by our mental, emotional, physicalnd spiritual vitality.

When I assess a client I start by looking at the position of the head, jaw, neck and move on down through the shoulders, pelvis all the way down to the feet. When I see something that looks out of the ordinary, I am asking the question – is this just a problem with poor ergonomics at the office,  or is there an emotional issue that is overriding the clients ability to hold themselves in good posture. Emotional issues like depression, can alter hormone levels, cause faulty breathing and cause the appearance of rounded shoulders and a forward head, and pain in upper and lower back.

There is a survival totem guide that I use in my postural assessments, that looks at breathing, chewing, hearing, as well as the position of the head neck and pelvis that are very influential, amongst many other things. This gives me a starting point, and helps me to focus my energy on assessing what might be underlying root cause of this postural change.

If you are health practitioner or personal trainer, interested in finding out more about this form of assessment and how it can help you to help your clients, then you may be interested in a new weekend long course called ‘Assess, don’t Guess’ running sat 28th February and 1st March 2009. please take a look at http://dcintegratedhealth.com/assess-dont-guess/  for more details.
