Today, the BBC reported the news of the 500,000th heart pacemaker being fitted, and the advances in technology that have seen it go from the size of a pram wheel to smaller than a matchbox. The pacemaker is designed to resychronize heart muscle function generally after heart attacks, or if there is an arrhythmia (out of rhythm).

Mrs Trudie Lobban, founder of the Arrhythmia Alliance said: “Although implants have increased in the UK by 5% each year, we need an increase of 15% per annum to be in line with European implant rates by 2016.

She added: “100,000 sudden cardiac deaths occur in the UK every year, yet 80% of these could possibly be avoided if diagnosed and treated appropriately.”

My fundamental question is what is the definition of ‘treated appropriately’, and why is heart disease such a huge problem, now, when there was no reported heart attacks before 1941?

There are three main biological oscilators in the human body – the brain, the heart and the intestines and they should all pulse together in harmony or synchronicity. Each one of these organs produces an electric and electromagnetic field as the pump blood, spinal fluid, send nerve messages or pump food. The electromagnetic fields of each of these organs interact with each other and in a healthy person, synchronize.

However if the brain is affected adversely by mental stress, continuous negative thought, or depression or any stressor, its electrical pulse, and the electromagnetic field that surrounds it alter and can interact with the electromagnetic field of the heart causing arrhythmias and dysfunctions of the heart muscle.

This is one potential cause of heart disease, and a potent example of how the body works as an integrated system of systems, and not like a set of seperate parts, with no influence on each other.

Extending this phenomenom, you can see other potential sources for heart problems -

Your intestines – physical stress from intolerances, allergies, parasites, fungal infections, bacterial overgrowth, could also cause heart problems.

Emotional issues can cause ‘tummy ache’or IBS symptoms, or a mind that can’t switch off, or overworking without adequate sleep (to help your brain and nervous system recover) can all cause problems with our hearts.

When you view the body as an integrated whole, with each cell able to communicate with another, then you realise that the attainment and maintenace of health is about integrating and balancing the the things we all do every day – the life principles. These are – Diet, hydration, sleep, sunlight, movement, thought – all of which affect every part of our body and have an influence on each other.

So, to end, In my opinion the first priority in the fight against heart disease is not to treat at all (you should always consult with your GP for medical advice). We should all be viewing our bodies as a whole integrated, communicating unit of many trillion cells, and that the route to good health is not through chopping it up into seperate parts to treat, but assessing what we all can do for ourselves by making small but significant changes to our life principles – as these are the messages we send to our bodies on a continuous basis, and are therefore the most influential.

You will probably need help to achieve this, and we will be happy to help you, or look for a CHEK practitioner in your area at http://www.chekinstitute,com

A BBC report on 9 April 2009, cites the rise in worldwide allergies to the increase in ‘westernisation’ of lifestyle and diet http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7989873.stm. Indigenuous peoples and western cultures around the world are being studied, including India, where there is a growing middle class who have adopted a western lifestyle and diet, and it is in this group that allergies have grown. They identify diet and pollution as a major source for this increase in allergies, as those who continued to farm and grow their own food, were unaffected by allergies.

This is neither shocking or surprising, as there have been many studies in the past (notably by Weston A. Price, Pottenger, Sally Fallon), that have recognised the link between a western diet of sugar, salt, refined grains and fats, pasteurised dairy products, additives, preservatives, artificial fertilisers and pesticides and disease.

In my opinion, and from my clinical experience, many people have an overloaded immune system secondary to a dysfunction in their gut caused by the consumption of the above, the exposure to antibiotics both directly and from their food, and other pollutants.

One of the first things that I do with my clients is to take them through a ‘blocking factor checklist’. This allows them and me to see the stressors on their body that are contributing to a breakdown in thier immune system (which is a cause of allergies)

I look at all potential stressors including food, water, electromagnetic stress from computers and phones, mercury in teeth, home and work pollution, use of household and work chemicals, personal care products, and many other factors including mental and emotional factors. All these factors can infiltrate through the gut, skin, or brain and bring a myriad of symptoms including allergies.

Using this checklist along with other tools, I coach my clients to listen to their body and make the changes they need to support their own body to move towards good health, all based around self empowerment, and building a connection with nature – through the food they eat and the lifestyle they choose.

It seems that this model would be very useful when looking at the global problems of allergies and other disease – keeping our focus on working in harmony with nature is the key to all our futures.

A report from the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/7932108.stm , suggests that ‘teenagers are biologically predisposed to go to bed later and wake later’, and that they are underperforming at school as a result. The proposal is to start the school day later, and put challenging classes later in the day, when teenagers perform better.

Whilst I applaud some of the recommendations, and the acknowledgement of our individual biorhythms (internal body clocks) as an influence on our function, I think the study does not consider the one major influence that drives our internal body clocks – the sun.

Circadian (the time of the day) rhythm’s main influence is that of light, and it influences all other rhythms and functions within our bodies, for example, sleep/wake, body temperature, thirst, and appetite. The problem is that our bodies can’t distinguish between sun light and light from TV, light bulbs, computers, mobile phones, which not only can reset our circadian rhythm, but cause a stress response that will hinder our quality of sleep and our ability to regenerate and repair all the cells of our body, including brain cells.

Most teenagers make use of all of these devices and often use or watch them in bed, which will have a profound influence, on their ability to function the next morning. I think that we need to look back to nature for an answer and educate teenagers about some foundations of human life – sleep, and diet. Making this part of the educational syllabus will not only help teenagers sleep and perform better at school, but help build a better relationship with nature.

At present I believe we show great disonance with nature whilst we exploit its resources. Oil has given us a false sense of security, but this will soon run out, and I believe the future will be governed by our ability to change and work with nature. We need to be teach children in school that we are part of nature and inextricably linked with the soils, the sun, the moon, the rain forests, the poles. With this information, I believe we will again become resonant with the rest of nature and our overall health will improve, including our teenagers!

In a BBC report on 22 February 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7905223.stm , a study be the charity BEAT, found that only 15% of patients felt that their GP understood or knew how to help them.

Eating disorders like aneroxia are a subject close to my heart, as something that I wrestled with as a child and watched my ex-wife suffer with. It is a terrible disease, and whilst I know that the trigger and the route cause is always different, from person to person, it nearly always has a connection with a lack of control felt by the person.

Not eating, or bingeing and vomitting result in rapid weight loss, and happy feelings as brain chemistry changes, and saiety centre of the brain gives a full sign. Body shape changes, are often initially very pleasing, and this adds to the happy feeling, feelings of regained control.

Unfortunately, this comes at a cost to both the persons body and mind. The body, is starved of the nutrients it needs to function properly, and when combined with over exercising, the adrenal glands pump out cortisol to just keep going, and this leads to the breakdown of almost any cell in the body for energy. With regard to the mind, in my experience, once a desired change on body shape has happened, then fear becomes a dominant motivator, the fear of putting weight back on, and not being able to control it. Fat and protein are avoided, in favour of liquid foods, fruit, vegetables, so thebody becomes further deficient in nutrients especially those required to repair, rebuild and digest food.

Problems with the gut (bloating), kidney and liver ensue, which fight for attention against the continued happy feelings coming from the brain.

Unravelling these problems, take care and attention, and above all a lot of time, to get past the issue of ‘eating a balanced diet’ to the underlying cause. I have found that this can only happen if the person with an eating disorder wants to stop his or her behaviour, and has a reason to do so. While the person continues with the same behaviour, they feel they have control where they didn’t, so without really solid reasons and desires they will not change.

Changes in diet are important, and are vital in the repair of a severly malnourished body, but in my experience will not work in the long term without finding the persons ‘control issue’. If they are willing to seek help, and if they can be honest (lieing to self and others is common with anorexia) then working on a parallel path with specific diet and supplements, and establishing feelings of self control and desire (rather than fear), then eating disorders can be overcome.
